What most (if not all) conversations about this topic miss, is that English isn't the only language on the planet, but it is one of the many lingua-franca out there, meaning people learn English in many schools as a second language. Using they/them is (apologies in advance for what comes next) so incredibly ignorant and stupid that it goes against every DEI rule in the book. It creates unnecessary confusion and offence. Linguists should quickly come up with a new word. It sucks that English has gender pronouns, but it doesn't mean we need to make everyone's lives harder because of it. "They/them" is plural and it's taken. Come up a with different word, folks, instead of reusing existing ones. It's really not that difficult.
