Forget foldables and flip phones. Sure, they’re cool if you like bending plastic screens or seeing creases in the middle. If you’re in South Korea, they seem to be virtually the only kind of phone people own these days — according to Netflix, anyway. As “innovative” they may seem though, I — the Apple fanboy — got excited by something entirely different, a phone that looks and works exactly like all the other standard smartphones out there, and yet it’s incredibly different. The first Android phone that got me excited like no other tech apart from maybe the Apple Vision Pro in the last decade, is no other than the Fairphone 5.

You could certainly argue that I’m late to the party and Fairphone is nothing new, and you’d be right to some extent. As a company, they have been around for exactly a decade. A small Dutch company — in the face of those who say tech innovation doesn’t happen in the EU — focused on creating electronics with a highly reduced environmental impact in a way that is directly beneficial to the average consumer.
