Thanks for your thoughtful response. The reason why I urge all writers to be careful with mentioning colour is because it largely depends on context. In your case for instance, the article makes me believe you might be sharing your experiences from a North American perspective. Nothing wrong with that as long as that is mentioned somewhere. While we write in English, Medium is read across the world, so we cannot generalise a local issue. Looking at the racial distribution across the US alone, it becomes very clear that the vast majority is still represented by caucasians. This leads to the inevitable conclusion that in fact the problem is not that white males feel more empowered to act like creeps but rather that there is less of a chance to meet an empowered hispanic, black, asian, etc. Not to dismiss your experience as irrelevant, but in the large scheme of things, it is anecdotal. Someone else from India could write perhaps the exact opposite about Indian men, or someone in Japan, about Japanese men. The world's population is actually not dominated by white people, as caucasians are one of the smaller groups, which makes it quite impossible to characterise white males as creepier than others.

Perhaps it feels like I am nitpicking, but my point is, that we want to be careful about creating stereotypes. Unfortunately every time I hear race + gender, I instantly feel like an entire group is being targeted unfairly. I would really love writers to at least keep in mind that their audience is international. Not every American, British, Australian, etc problem is universal. I know we like calling spades spades, but that should only be done either by reducing the context or backed up by very reliable global data.

Anyway, thought I'd share where I'm coming from. 🙂
