The one thing I knew for sure when I got my M1 was that I rarely if ever needed to work with VMs or dockers, and should that change in the near future, I have the Intel machine to fall back to. Was that not the case, I would have absolutely went with 16B of RAM. There is this guy, Alexander Ziskind who does a lot of developer comparisons on YouTube and even with 16GB on his Air M1, the optimised preview of Docker lost to the Intel machine. I think the final release won’t be a whole lot better, but maybe just on par with running on Intel. With dockers and VMs even more so, I think one starts to run into the physical limitations of RAM, especially on an SOC where that memory is shared for graphics as well.
