Tried the “if we’re still single at age x” thing too, in fact she suggested it, and we both agreed, except at that point you realise you want anything but to settle just because you couldn’t find who you wanted. So, ultimately I don’t think it works. Just say how you feel, and if they’re a good friend, they’ll stay your friend even if they don’t feel the same way as you. Alternatively let the feeling dissolve into nothing over time.
