Staff level in one's 30s, principal in their 40s makes sense. I wouldn't necessarily connect age to levels though, as I have seen very bright minds over the years and there are cases where 10 years gets you to your peak, if you specialise in something. Take for instance a web accessibility engineer after 10 years has likely seen enough that they deserve to be principal.
