Some are blatant lies, but to give you a rule of thumb, if a writer says they're earning in the hundreds or perhaps even a grand / month, and they have at least 1.5K followers and 10+ stories a month, with plenty claps and a few comments, then they're likely telling the truth. 7 year Medium veteran here.
