Remembering Sinéad

Another one of the greats left us…

My music critic days are far behind me. The last album I reviewed was Pink Martini’s Dream a Little Dream, and that was in 2020. These days, it’s just about listening to music and collecting records. Old, new, whatever fancies my eardrums, touches my soul or gets my feet tapping. No time for music reviews, no time to even stay up to date with the lives of my favourite artists. I kept putting off going to Leonard Cohen’s concerts, always thinking “next time”. There will be a next time, won’t there? We take tomorrow for granted, and the only time we realise it’s not, is when someone reminds us just how fleeting life is. Fate decided, it was Sinéad O’Connor’s turn to wake us up again.

Sinéad O’Connor passed away on the 26th of July 2023, at the young age of 56. A tragedy in itself, and an even bigger tragedy for all lovers of great music.

I grew up in Eastern Europe, so for nearly two decades I kept — like everyone else in Romania — pronouncing her name wrong. In fairness, no one but the Irish know how to pronounce Irish names, and sometimes even they get it wrong. Caoimhe anyone? Let’s not go there, shall we…? 😄 We didn’t mean to butcher Sinéad’s name. We loved her music regardless. How could you not
