Often it's pure ego or misguided enthusiasm. The more senior I got, the more I started caring about the products I build than the code that makes it happen. I want to focus on coding the business logic. If car manufacturers built everything themselves all the time, down to the last screw, it would be an absolute disaster and cars would cost many times more than they actually do.
