I've had similar thoughts myself. On the other hand it's kind of baffling the hoops many software engineers have to jump through even after 10 or 20 years of career. Once you have a good CV and references, should it not be obvious you're able to code and do so productively? I think half the stuff asked to be demonstrated in interview should be cut entirely cut from the interview process.
