I use humour a lot in technical writing, and I still think that was uncalled for and shows poor taste at the very least. There is a line that should not be crossed, this article crossed it, I’m sorry. It does not diminish its technical value which is top notch, but in terms of writing, it pushes the limits unnecessarily.
