I only work on private repositories so can’t show you public branches, but merged branches can still remain as branches, PR history still exists which retains commits, so these messages can and do have as long a lifetime as needed. On the branch itself, when working on a story or task it absolutely helps tracing back something to a given commit. Good commit messages are genuine milestones in one’s development process. Invaluable.
