I have to disagree with your assessment of Classic Lego being sold today. I see many of those so-called "esoteric" parts being used in so many other scenarios and other sets. As someone who started with Lego in 1992, I see all of those old pieces still being used today in many new sets and MOCs. I think these so-called "esoteric" pieces only further enhance the imagination rather than become useless.
