I don't think that one has to be at odds with the other however, the realities of paying for office space for those who make use of it, and prefer such a work environment does have to make financial sense. Office space contracts tend to be long-term. If as a business you have a 7-year contract but within 3 years 50% of workers prefer not to use it, it's a problem, and while I am very much pro remote work (I've been doing it for over 5 years), we can't all just shrug and call it the business' problem.
