I aways struggled with the concept of family and the saying that "blood doesn't turn to water". We universally want humans to regard family as the de-facto greatest thing in their lives, but when you start looking at things pragmatically, it's not quite like that and a lot of anguish and trauma stems from family ties. We're basically told, we must love a bunch of humans and care about them, because... DNA. I care about my parents, but honestly, I love some of my friends more, and I don't think that makes me a horrible person.

This story of yours reminds me that we owe it to ourselves to only stay in relationships that elevate our lives. All others are not worth investing in.
