One of my two granddads was taken far too early from us by a stroke. I was but 7, and the reason I remember it more vividly than other events that year was no other than a LEGO set. My first-ever LEGO set, to be more exact. I only had it for a couple of days and right in the middle of rebuilding it for the umpteenth time, the doorbell rang. The next memory I have is of a coffin being lowered into the ground two days later. Stroke wasn’t even part of my vocabulary yet, and I didn’t really know what I lost until years later, when I found out that my granddad served in the Second World War. Caught by the enemy forces, and imprisoned. I bet he had stories, first-hand encounters as an adult I would give anything to hear. Yet, the only vivid memory associated with him, I have left, is a handful of LEGO bricks.
Thirty years later, I find myself connecting the dots between LEGO and stroke yet again, though this time, while still a sobering story, it’s a far more positive one, and it begins with a simple comment on a recent LEGO review of mine, Nara Andi’s comment…
