Don't give up Calum. These things always fluctuate for various reasons very often unrelated to any algorythm. You just keep on writing about the stuff you love and care about. The rest happens mostly organically. Do an experiment. Write half the articles you did last month, but put more personality and effort into them, see how that works. You might be surprised by the results. 😉
