But I looked at the stats and there was a surge in reads yesterday, almost doubling the number of reads on the story. So now I wonder whether blocking bots increases visibility of a story to human readers, or if the whole thing is one big coincidence.

Check how many of those reads came via email. Usually when there is a surge like that days after publishing, it’s because of email digests being sent out.
