Apple and privacy may have become synonymous over the last few years. In many tech circles that’s certainly the case and Apple makes sure at every opportunity to highlight that, be that their events or through ads like the one launched in spring of 2023. While you may gloss over the fact that very conveniently the comments for the ad on YouTube are turned off, I do think that both as a technologist and an Apple fan, a conversation must be had about Apple’s privacy stance, especially given the latest developments in the UK, where it’s threatening to shut off both iMessage and FaceTime, should the government force them to weaken their security to adhere to a revamped version of the Investigatory Powers Act.
That the UK is facing another Thatcher era, is no surprise to anyone who voted remain in 2016. It’s also fairly common knowledge that the UK loves surveillance and CCTVs. Give the government the opportunity to install one in your toilet, and they’ll happily oblige.
