Apple’s Pixelmator Purchase Spells Bad News For Adobe
Apple is buying my all-time favourite app, and it’s both good news and bad news…
Apple buys smaller businesses all the time, and that’s rarely something I find noteworthy enough to sit down and write an analysis of. This time it’s a tad more personal though, as it just so happens to be Pixelmator, one of my favourite apps. It’s the app I ditched Adobe for, heck, it even pulled me away from Affinity Photo, even though I paid for it and was already quite proficient at using it. Long story short, I have been a happy, productive Pixelmator user since 2020, so stumbling upon their update on being acquired by Apple left me with mixed feelings.
Why Pixelmator?
Pixelmator, or to be more specific, Pixelmator Pro, is a surprisingly capable piece of software for the low-low price of just $50. And that’s a one-time purchase. For your 50 bucks you get photo, video, and vector editing tools. Too good to be true? That’s what I thought too as I was contemplating moving away from Adobe. In my case, all I needed was a decent photo editing tool that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. My skepticism quickly melted away though as I gave it a try. It was good. It was damn good.
